How to Create a LinkedIn Profile Recruiters Find

Headline, About, skills and settings, step by step, with a headline maker and a checklist that remembers your progress.

1Recruiters search, so be findable

Recruiters search LinkedIn like Google: they type a role and skills, then filter by location. Your headline, About and Skills decide whether you appear. Write them with the exact words a recruiter would type.

2Photo and banner

  • Photo: just your face, good light, plain background. It makes people far more likely to open your profile.
  • Banner: one line about what you do, e.g. "Java Backend Developer · Spring Boot · AWS". A plain colour with text is fine.

3Headline: the most important line

Default headlines say "Student at XYZ College". Replace it with your role, top skills and one result.

    4About: tell a short story

Write 3–5 short paragraphs in your own voice:

    1. Who you are: "I'm a Java backend developer who likes making slow systems fast."
    2. What you've done: 2–3 results with numbers.
    3. What you work with: your main tools and skills.
    4. What you want next: the role you're looking for, and how to reach you.

Use "I" here. LinkedIn is a conversation, not a resume.

    5Experience, skills and projects

    • Copy your best resume bullets into each job, with numbers.
    • Add up to 50 skills and put the most relevant first. Ask teammates to endorse the top ones.
    • Freshers: add projects and internships, and link your GitHub in the Featured section.

    6Settings that recruiters see

    • Custom URL: Edit public profile → linkedin.com/in/your-name. Put it on your resume.
    • Open to Work: choose "Recruiters only" if you're employed, and list 3–5 job titles.
    • Location: set your city, or the city you want to work in.

    7Stay active, 10 minutes a week

Post one thing you learned, share a project, or leave a thoughtful comment on someone's post. Activity shows up in your network's feed and keeps your profile in front of people.
